The use of her signature song “My Heart Will Go On” by Trump was decried by Celine Dion.
Singer Celine Dion and Sony Music, owner of the song, My Heart Will Go On, have issued a formal protest on X (formerly Twitter) against the campaign of former President Donald J. Trump for its use of the recording and the likeness of the singer, at a Trump/JD Vance campaign event held in Montana last week.
My Heart Will Go On is the theme song for the 1997 film “Titanic,” a movie about an ocean liner striking an iceberg and then sinking more than a century ago. Reached at a Jamaican soul food restaurant in San Francisco, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala D. Harris remarked lightly that she thought that use of the song “was both symbolic and apropos.”
My Heart Will Go On has sold more than 18 million copies worldwide since 1998. It is listed among the Songs of the Century by the Recording Association of America. Rocker Neil Young, like Dion a Canadian, has likewise complained that Trump misused his intellectual property, citing the 2020 Trump campaign’s unauthorized use of his hit, Rockin’ in the Free World.
Reached at an organized book burning on the lawn of his Mar-a-Lago estate on Sunday, Trump addressed Young’s and Dion’s charges. “Neil Young is low-IQ,” said Trump, “and Dion (he pronounced it dye-on) is just another uppity chick.” In 2022, Dion was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition known as Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). Trump addressed this as well, saying that SPS is “fake medicine” and that Dion is merely trying to engender “sympathy for a failed career.”
My Heart Will Go On was penned by composer James Homer and lyricist Will Jennings. Dion was quoted as saying she didn’t want her work to be used “to support a rapist, an embezzler and a fraud.” Trump sniffed at the remarks, alluding critically to Dion’s “flawed body,” and indicating that “she’s not my type.”
The issue has likely been resolved, however. Has-been heavy metal rocker and small animal killer Ted Nugent has come forth with an offer for the Trump/Vance campaign to use his 1977 quasi-hit Cat Scratch Fever, which garnered modest plaudits nearly half a century ago. Trump is reportedly fine with that and has said that TrumpStore.com will reissue the eponymous album on which the tune appeared. It will come with a red MAGA cap and sell for $250.
In Other News: Sony Music spokesman Kevin Doak told the press this week that “arrangements are in the works” to allow the Trump campaign to continue to use My Heart Will Go On while at the same time protecting the integrity of the work. Sony is presently in talks with Bagdasarian Productions, a West coast production company that owns the rights to Alvin and the Chipmonks, a novelty band. “By using the Chipmonks,” said Doak, “everyone will be protected.” Other contenders for re-recording the song include Kid Rock, Kanye West and “Weird Al Yankovic.” Vice presidential candidate JD Vance is reportedly in favor of theh latter artist.
