A Zinger from Bangladesh

Review: “Zinger Toonz: Dark n’ Twisted” – a cartoon book from Bangladesh

For Bangladeshi cartoonist Obaidur Rahman, it seems, inspiration for humor is drawn from his dark and twisted frame of mind. His new book of cartoons is aptly titled, “Zinger Toonz: Dark n’ Twisted.”

When reading this work, the initial feeling is that of opening one of the rare MAD paperback editions from the olden days. In that context, cartoonist Obaidur Rahman, who hails from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, does not disappoint. His humorous take of various aspects of life and the living will transport you.

When the reader goes through the initial credits behind this publication, he/she immediately notices that, both front and the back cover of the book have been ardently illustrated by the cartoonist himself. These include images of his oil paintings, giving the impression that the cartoonist concerned here is not only a cleaver observer of human nature, but also a skilled artisan.

This book displays quite a variety of ideas, themes and topics; settings that stand out from one another, yet are tied to the general inspiration of the collective premise of “Zinger Toonz: Dark n’ Twisted,” which is the pursuit of the funny, and the provoking of laughter.

As the cartoonist Obaidur Rahman himself declared at the very start of the book, “Laughter is to the human soul what water is to life.”
