This graphic novel style book, “The Mind of a Horse,” is an excellent way to learn about horses and their inner lives.

The Mind of a Horse, by Helena Telkänranta, Maija Karala and Ville Sinkkonen.

The Mind of a HorseThis graphic novel style book is an excellent way to learn about horses and their inner lives. The illustrations are beautiful and elegant and will be enjoyed by children and adults alike, as will the entire book.

The Mind of a Horse is steeped in the latest scientific knowledge about horses and their behavior, yet presented in a friendly way that lay people can enjoy, even if they’ve never been horse lovers before.

It’s a great way to learn about horses, especially for children (ages 12 and up for reading, but sure to be enjoyed by kids of all ages). Practical tips throughout on improving horse health and happiness are included, as well as keys to success in horse training and solving problem behaviors.

As the introduction notes, “Scientists now know more than ever before about how the mind of a horse works. How to motivate them in training, what can they feel, and how to ensure their well-being.”

The Mind of a HorseThe book imparts a lot of this knowledge to the reader in a way that makes it easy and pleasant to assimilate. This may be the world’s first comic book on the behavior and welfare of animals, and as such, the authors have developed original storytelling techniques to impart the science of behavior of horses. For example, they often include thought bubbles for the horses to help the reader understand what they are thinking and feeling, although the authors are quick to point out that they “do not intend to suggest that horses think in words – they don’t.”

The book is based on scientific studies, and at the end of each comic chapter, some text is added to summarize and expound on the lessons imparted on previous pages. QR codes are also included for those wishing to delve deeper, linking to website pages with more information on the subject at hand.

As comic lovers ourselves, we here at the Humor Times heartily recommend this remarkable book!
