Help the Humor Times continue to thrive by contributing to our fundraiser today!

I am writing this open letter to all our readers to announce our fundraiser. Humor TimesThe Humor Times (formerly the Comic Press News) is now in its fourth decade. I founded it, as both a website and a monthly printed periodical, publishing the first issue in April, 1991. We've been able to basically just break even or do a little better ever since. As the publisher, I don't mind, it's a labor of love. I feel it provides an important service -- namely, helping people to keep a sense humor, despite the shape of the world today.  However, we can't afford to operate the publication at a deficit. The Humor Times faces rising costs, including content providers (mainly cartoon sources), mail rates, and now the big one, printing costs.  As I wrote in this month's editor's letter in the publication, we lost our printer of many years, the recent August issue being the last they will print. They are going out of business, as so many small presses/newspapers have been for years now. The remaining local web presses (the kind that use newsprint) have been all bought up by one corporate entity, as far as I know (maybe two). With basically no competition, they can charge what they want, and predictably, it's more than we were paying. As a small publication, the Humor Times has become a bit of an anomaly by staying in business — and in print — through tough times. But it can only continue by meeting its expenses. This will require an increase in advertising, subscription numbers and/or donations. Despite decades of promoting the publication (albeit on a tiny promotional budget), the paid circulation is still too small to support it on its own. Our readers are quite passionate about the periodical, and their passion tells us that we could have a much larger paid circulation — if we could only afford to promote it properly. This could solve all our financial problems. However, we are not there yet, so we need to increase our current revenue. We can do this with advertising (we’re working on that), subscriptions, and donations — via this fundraiser. So, we are encouraging individuals and businesses to sign up as monthly patrons of the Humor Times. This can be done directly with us here, or through Patreon.com here. Subscriptions, for yourself or others (print and digital formats available worldwide), are always a great way to support us, and if you have let your subscription lapse, please renew here or by contacting us today! Please consider helping out the Humor Times at this critical juncture. Sincerely, and forever in good humor, James Israel Editor, Humor Times P.S. Please share this page widely on social media or by email, by using the share buttons provided! Also, we hope you will visit our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Mastodon. President levels the most brutal of sanctions yet on Putin: No more political humor for you!

SNN political correspondent Proppah Ghandah reports that President Biden has cancelled Vladimir Putin's subscription to Humor Times magazine as a major part of the personal sanctions levied against the Russian dictator. [caption id="attachment_98752" align="alignleft" width="400"]sanctions Putin will miss it, but luckily, the entire free world can still subscribe.[/caption] Officials at Humor Times headquarters stated that in protest of the Ukrainian invasion, they will not refund Putin's subscription payment. They also stated that because Putin paid in Russian Rubles, his subscription is only worth six cents. It has been further reported that Putin's subscriptions to TV Guide and Better Homes and Gardens were also cancelled. Other personal sanctions levied against Mr. Putin include:
  • He cannot date Martha Raddatz, Jen Psaki or Whoopi Goldberg.
  • He is forbidden to make March Madness TV commercials with Spike Lee, Charles Barkley and Samuel L Jackson.
  • He cannot appear on The View or Fox News Channel.
  • His Sling TV subscription was cancelled.
  • His membership in The Ukrainian Vodka of the Month club was revoked.
  • Major League Baseball has cancelled the 2022 season so Putin cannot throw out the first pitch at The New York Mets home opener.
  • The World Health Organization will declare Putin a pandemic.
In a related story, SNN Moscow correspondent Roscoe Siberia reports that Mr. Putin is dispatching his personal assassin Ludmilla The Thrilla to Humor Times headquarters to get his subscription back. Ban the Humor Times app? You might as well ban political satire altogether!

Google is threatening to ban the Humor Times app, The News in Cartoons, from their Google Store. [caption id="attachment_84482" align="alignleft" width="250"]Ban the Humor Times app? The Humor Times Android app.[/caption] In email warnings to the Humor Times, they cite their “Hate Speech policy,” which reads: “We don’t allow apps that promote violence, or incite hatred against individuals or groups based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, age, nationality, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or any other characteristic that is associated with systemic discrimination or marginalization.” Now, as anyone who’s ever looked at our simple Android app (not yet available for iPads or iPhones) could tell you, there’s not an ounce of hatred in it directed against any such groups or individuals, and we do the exact opposite of “promoting violence” – that is, we promote debate, discussion and voting. Of course, there IS plenty of pointed political satire – as there is in this publication – but that is something else altogether. In fact, it’s protected free speech! If our app content deserves to be banned, then newspapers should cease printing editorial cartoons, TV hosts should stop delivering their satirical monologues every night, and half of the content Google allows on its YouTube site should be taken down! We have appealed their decision to their “policy support team,” and are awaiting a ruling. If they rule against us, perhaps we should take the case all the way to the Supreme Court. What do you think? Go to our post about this on our website (humortimes.com) and leave a comment! Meanwhile, they’ve taken it down from the store, even before reviewing their decision, so unfortunately, you can’t get it right now. Hopefully, they’ll reverse their silly decision and put it back up. We’ll keep you posted. However, you can see some of the previous content we've had on the app, reproduced here. If you’re a fan of the app, or just the Humor Times in general, please go to the Google Store (play.google.com) and hit the “question mark” icon, then “Send Feedback" (or "Email"), and tell ’em what you think! Meanwhile, you may express yourself with comments below. Thank you! [post_title] => Google Threatens to Ban the Humor Times App! The new year is not complete without it! Order your copy of the "Impeachment Issue" -- January's Humor Times!

The historic "Impeachment Issue" of the Humor Times has gone to press, on the very same day Donald J Trump was impeached. We didn't plan it that way, but it seems oh-so-fitting! Humor Times Impeachment Issue coverThe Humor Times (originally titled the Comic Press News) is in its 28th year, so we've covered two Democratic presidents and three Republicans. In the 230 year history of our nation, before Clinton, only one had been impeached. That was Andrew Johnson, who followed Abraham Lincoln into office, serving during another very divisive time. Johnson was impeached because he dared to appoint a Secretary of War (as they were called then) without the required advice and consent of the Senate, among 10 other articles. He avoided conviction in the Senate by just one vote. Nixon, of course, famously quit before the unavoidable impeachment went though. If he had stuck around, he would've been the only president both impeached and convicted. Now, the modern Republican Party, so centered in moral certitude as it is, impeached Bill Clinton along mostly partisan lines for lying about a blow job. There were four articles voted on in his case, but only two passed, for perjury and obstruction of justice (basically, for encouraging Monica Lewinsky to lie also). But, let's remember, it all centered on sex in the Oval Office. Republicans were all indignant about that one! [caption id="attachment_80494" align="alignright" width="400"]impeachment issue cartoon One of the dozens of editorial cartoons in the "Impeachment Issue," by Tom Toles.[/caption] Now comes the impeachment of Donald J Trump. Republicans in a rigid block against this one. Hey, no sex was involved! Merely the solicitation of "a favor, though" from a foreign power to help the president get reelected! And, of course, the little matter of withholding military aid from said government -- aid that was appropriated by Congress to help them fight an invasion by a common adversary. In other words, an act threatening our own national security. Nothing to see here! Again, where's the blow job??? So, yes, there were very good reasons for impeaching Trump -- many more reasons than were included in the two articles. In fact, his crimes are ongoing, and a threat to our democracy. Plain and simple. Talk about "SAD"!!! [caption id="attachment_80495" align="alignleft" width="400"]impeachment issue cartoon Another cartoon from the January issue, this one by Rob Rogers.[/caption] It's true, these are divisive times for our nation, and that's not very funny. But the genius of the great editorial cartoonists we publish is that they DO make us laugh, while at the same time providing thought-provoking commentary. And we arrange these many dozens of cartoons each issue into a kind of "news report," arranging the cartoons by subject, and connecting them with a running narrative. The result is a hilarious monthly review of the news -- a great way to laugh about the news, rather than cry about it! So, on this historic occasion, why not order your copy of the historic Humor Times "Impeachment Issue" today? While you're at it, why not subscribe for a year or more, and/or give gift subscriptions? 'Tis the season!!! Your gift will be treasured -- not just once -- but every month! Thanks, and we'll be seeing you in the funny pages! Help the Humor Times survive in a tough environment for independent press outlets!

The Humor Times is a website, sure, but we're also a monthly print magazine (available worldwide, in digital or print form), and we offer a free e-newsletter. We do the world a service by helping readers laugh about the news, instead of cry about it! We proudly count ourselves among the many, varied independent press outlets, a beleaguered but essential part of any democracy. And we can use your support! Make America Grin Again, by supporting the Humor Times with subscriptions and/or donations! independent press, Humor TimesThe highly-praised Humor Times magazine is a "cartoon review of the news" -- a great way to review the news each month, with humor and style. Our magazine's slogan is, "Don't cry about the news, laugh about it, with the Humor Times!" Over a hundred political cartoons are featured in every issue, by the best in the business, and are arranged by subject, strung together with a running narrative -- in effect, telling news stories via editorial cartoon. The monthly publication also features satirical news stories, humor columns (by the great political satirist Will Durst and others), non-political cartoons and more. While very popular with those who have discovered it, the magazine's finances suffer from the fact that we don't have the budget to promote it via advertising. So, most people who would appreciate it don't even know it exists. You may obtain a free sample copy by mail here (with a small S&H charge) or view a recent sample issue online FREE here. The survival of this website, as well as our e-newsletter and app, depend on the revenue generated by the publication. So, we are appealing to you, kind website reader, for help in supporting the entire continued existence of that entity known collectively as the "Humor Times." You can help in many ways: by subscribing to the magazine, with a one-time or monthly donation, or by becoming a sustaining patron via our Humor Times Patreon page. In these days of bland corporate "news coverage," it's more important than ever to support independent media, and what is a more politically fun way to do that than helping out the Humor Times? Please consider giving a little or a lot. Your reward is in knowing you are helping to keep people sane, via a healthy dose of political satire! Thank you very much. As of the first of the year, the Humor Times magazine is being carried nationally by Barnes & Noble -- and now features almost all color throughout!

We are excited to announce that the first issue ever of the Humor Times will be available in Barnes & Noble stores (and others) across the nation, starting with the new year. [caption id="attachment_65701" align="alignright" width="301"]Humor Times magazine Cropped image from the latest issue cover of the Humor Times magazine. Click to enlarge.[/caption] If you have never seen a copy of the Humor Times magazine, stop by a Barnes & Noble and check it out! The monthly magazine is basically a review of the news, told the fun way. We use the finest editorial cartoons by the best cartoonists, arranged by subject and strung together with a running narrative, to re-tell recent news stories in a hilariously satirical manner. (The magazine features many more editorial cartoonists than we have on this website.) Political humor is big these days, on so many TV shows, online and in print -- and for good reason. People are thirsty for the comic relief. The political battles being fought now are critical to the future of our nation, and it’s easy to get burned out by the seriousness of it all. That’s where we come in! We make it entertaining, but we don’t hold back any punches. Politicians, celebrities, the media – they are all richly deserving of the satirical treatment we deliver. We have also added a lot more color to the printed publication. Whereas before it was 20% color, now it is 80% color. Thank you for visiting our website, but please, check out the magazine. Besides the stores, you can order a discounted three-issue trial run here for just five bucks, to be mailed right to your door! Please share your discovery of the Humor Times -- both online and in print -- on social media. See our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter). And don't forget, the Humor Times magazine makes a great gift, for anyone who follows the news and has a sense of humor! Right now, you can get $5 Off with our New Year’s Special, good through January 31st. Give subs to friends, family, coworkers – even yourself! Subscriptions are available worldwide, in print or digital formats. We welcome your feedback, whether by email, regular mail, or on our website or Facebook page comments.
